Trying MCT oil for my Brain Fog
Since contracting Long Covid on top of Myalgic Encephalomyelitis I have been really struggling with feeling groggy and sleepy all the time. So, as a last resort I spoke to my local health food shop, and they suggested trying MCT oil for my Brain Fog. That was a couple months ago, and I wanted to come and let you know what my experience has been.
What is it?
In a very basic way, so even I can understand it, MCT oil are fats with a very specific chemical makeup. It can help us in many ways and has been used in a variety of studies to treat Alzheimer’s, epilepsy and other illnesses.
This is because MCT oil can provide quick energy to the brain which can help memory and overall brain function. It is thought that this is because of how it is digested and because the brain is fatty and needs fat to stay healthy.
Why I chose to use it
My local health shop has been there for over twenty years and is very popular in our town, I have been going there for as long as it has been open. So, when I was finding my brain fog wouldn’t clear I wanted to try something natural before asking my doctor for help.
They suggested MCT oil because of these recent studies and I was so fed up with dealing with it all I decided to give it a try. I tried the capsules, and I get them from Holland and Barratt, not sponsored it you get products cheaper if you get it delivered monthly from them.
I will be honest, I didn’t have high expectations, mainly because whenever I mention brain fog to my doctors they don’t have many options. I knew I couldn’t carry on feeling as bad as I was though and made the decision to just give them a try.
With the brand (again not sponsored there are other brands available) I chose I take three capsules a day, with the three meals I eat. This helps my tummy cope with the oil and breaks it up over the day, as suggested by the instructions.
What I like about this type is that it is not fish based as so many oils have been in the past, this one is coconut oil. I love that it is in a capsule so I don’t taste anything too and to be honest I wondered how my body would cope with the oil.

I was wary of trying this supplement, I think many of us who have chronic illnesses feel this way about suggested vitamins and minerals. Not that we don’t like ‘alternative’ medicine, more that people often try to sell us cures that are more about money than actually helping.
However, the lady I spoke to gave me more information and had been to a seminar about the importance of more fat in our diets from healthy diets for brain health. And honestly, I am so glad that I did because it has made such a difference!
I am finding it so much easier to wake up every day, and my mind is so much clearer something I have not had for years. As well as this, I have had the energy levels to be able to add in 10minute cleaning and some sessions from my Accessible Exercise Playlist.
The biggest bonus is less of a need to nap and greater ability to actually be awake and mindful every day. Which, as you know is incredibly important to me and something I had found harder with the level of brain fog I was experiencing.
With less brain fog my days are so much more interesting and I can think more clearly, which has led me to thinking of learning a new skill like embroidery. I am also thinking about relearning how to crochet so that I can have a couple of hobbies away from screens.
As a side note, more oil in my diet has helped me to go to the bathroom more regularly which has been a problem since needing pain medication. Many of us deal with this and so that is a nice side to it for me, though could cause diarrhoea possibly for other people. My hair is also glossier and looks a lot healthier which can also be affected with chronic health conditions.
Overall, honestly, I am so glad that for once I thought to take a chance in trying MCT oil for my brain fog. I quickly saw improvements and am hopeful that will continue as I am able to move my body a little more and am attempting to eat better.
Thank you xx
