Disability Pride Isn’t About Loving Your Disability

Disability Pride Isn’t About Loving Your Disability; it’s about finding ways to live your best life despite symptoms and abilities that make it harder. Taking steps to make life possible, coping with the ups and downs of life, and not letting anyone make you feel less because of it.

I have been caring for my mom, who has Multiple Sclerosis, for the last few weeks as she has been really struggling. To be honest, it has really highlighted how much my own disabilities affect me and make it difficult.

There have been moments when I have just felt so overwhelmed with frustration and fear that I cannot take care of her. It has been physically demanding in a way that it had not before, and I am thankful to have a place to talk about that.

Disability Pride isn’t about loving your disability, it doesn’t mean I suddenly love pain, or fatigue or the limitations they bring.

It means understanding my body instead of fighting it and adapting rather than judging myself. It’s asking for help when I need it and not feeling like a burden and recognising that my worth does not come from how much I do in a day.

Today, as I write this post, I am in pain that makes me want to cry, I have a fan on me and a weighted blanket trying to help my legs. I did not feel well enough to write a long blog post, but I wanted to talk about this because it is important.

Today, instead of pushing myself and making my body feel worse, I am choosing to write something shorter because I work with my disabled body. It is about having pride and loving myself where I am instead of pretending it isn’t there.

Thank you xx
